If you're someone that is always tired working shift work, then you might actually be guilty of over indulging a little too often. Because the truth of the matter is, most of us have access to a lot of food. And I do mean a lot of food – so it can sometimes be hard to stop!
And I'm sure there are times when you've eaten so much that you've felt like you're ready to explode! Sounding familiar?
You see, overeating is actually a habit. Whether it's because you were brought up during times of scarcity and your parents insisted that you eat everything on your plate, or you just do it purely for comfort.
Either way, overeating is a habit but it's a habit that you can change.
If you're an over-eater then now is the time to stop because it's increasing your shift work fatigue and tiredness substantially.
According to Nutritionist Cyndi O'Meara, author of “Changing Habits Changing Lives”, overeating causes many health problems including the shortening of your life span, plays havoc with your digestion, encourages disease by making your immune system sluggish, and makes you feel tired and lethargic..
So don't think overeating just makes you fat!.
Now whenever you overeat, you generally feel full and uncomfortable. If you over-eat at dinner time, you can wake up the next day feeling sluggish as your stomach is in turmoil! As a shift worker it's bad enough getting up at 2:30am knowing that you're going to feel exhausted. But if you over-eat as well – then you can wake up feeling like you've just been hit by a Mac truck – head on!
So start taking responsibility for what does and doesn't go inside your mouth. Eat until you feel 80% full and then stop. Despite what your mother may have said to you all those years ago, you do not have to eat everything that is on your plate!
And bear in mind that there is no 'miracle cure' for over-eating. Creating a new habit, which is essentially what you are doing – takes time. You'll have days when you do really well, and then days when you do just that – over indulge..
So don't beat yourself up about it. Pat yourself on the back for the times you do well, and get back on track as soon as possible if you slip up. It takes 3 weeks to form a habit so once you've made it past that 3 week milestone – you will be on your way to being a much healthier, slimmer and much more energized shift worker!
P.S – Another hot tip for you – avoid the “All You Can Eat” restaurants. You might be thinking that you're getting value for money, but you're only fast tracking the aging process and putting unnecessary strain on your digestive system.
